How Medicare
can reduce your costs.
If you have a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) from your GP, you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate on up to 10 individual psychology sessions per calendar year. You may also be able to claim for some assessments. This significantly reduces the out-of-pocket cost of each appointment.
You don’t need a Mental Health Care Plan to see us — many clients prefer to self-refer. However, if cost is a factor, speaking to your GP first is a worthwhile step.
Our administrative team can also help point you in the right direction. Just ask when you call to book.
$98.95 - $124.30
per session (registered psychologist), depending on service type.
Rebate amounts are set by the Australian Government and reviewed periodically. Figures shown are current as of 2025.
How to get a Mental Health Care Plan
A quick GP visit is all it takes to unlock Medicare rebates on your psychology sessions.
Book a long appointment with your GP
Let them know you'd like to discuss your mental health and obtain a care plan. This is a ~20 minute appointment.
Your GP completes the MHCP
They'll assess your needs, set goals, and provide a referral to a psychologist. They will send the MHCP directly to us.
Book your appointment with us
Bring or email your care plan to your first session. Your Medicare rebate will apply from session one.
Review at session 6
Your GP will review your progress after 6 sessions. If you need more, they can extend your plan for up to 10 sessions per year.
Not sure if you need one?
You can book with us directly without a referral. If Medicare rebates would help, our team can advise you on next steps during your first contact.
Flexible ways
to pay for your care.
We accept a range of payment options to make things as accessible as possible.
EFTPOS & Credit Card
Visa, Mastercard, and EFTPOS accepted in clinic. Payment is processed at the time of your appointment.
Medicare Rebate (On-the-Spot)
If you have a Medicare card, we process your rebate on the spot via HICAPS. No need to claim separately.
Private Health Insurance
Many private health funds cover psychology services. Check with your provider for your extras cover details.
NDIS
We support clients with NDIS Self managed and plan managed referrals. Please mention this when booking so we can prepare appropriately.
You can book with or
without a GP referral.
We accept both self-referrals and GP referrals. You do not need a referral to book — you can contact us directly at any time. The main reason to get a referral from your GP is to access Medicare rebates via a Mental Health Care Plan.
With a GP referral / Mental Health Care Plan
Access up to 10 Medicare-subsidised sessions per calendar year. Your GP will assess your mental health and refer you to a registered psychologist. Rebate of $98.95 - $225 per session applies.
Without a referral (self-referral)
Book directly with us — no GP visit required. Full session fee applies without Medicare rebate.

Things people ask
before they book.
If your question isn’t answered here, our team is happy to talk it through before you commit to anything.
How much will I actually pay out of pocket?
With a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP, the Medicare rebate is currently $98.95 – $124.30 (depending on service type) per session for a registered psychologist. Our standard session fee is $225, making your out-of-pocket cost approximately $123 per session. Without a Medicare rebate, you pay the full session fee. Contact us to discuss your situation.
Do I need a GP referral before I can book?
No — you can contact us and book directly without a GP referral. Many of our clients self-refer. A GP referral (in the form of a Mental Health Care Plan) is only needed if you want to access Medicare rebates. If you’re unsure, call us first and we’ll help you figure out the best approach for your situation.
How many sessions will I need?
This varies depending on what you’re working through and your goals. Some clients benefit significantly from 4–6 sessions; others prefer ongoing support. Your psychologist will discuss this with you after your initial session and there’s no obligation to commit to a set number upfront. With a Mental Health Care Plan, Medicare funds up to 10 sessions per calendar year.
Can I claim my sessions through private health insurance?
Many private health funds do cover psychology services under their extras cover. The rebate amount varies by fund and policy. We recommend checking directly with your insurer before your appointment. Note that you generally cannot claim both Medicare and private health insurance for the same session — one or the other applies.
What happens if I need to cancel or reschedule?
We ask for at least 24 hours notice if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment. Late cancellations or no-shows may attract a cancellation fee. We understand that unexpected things happen — if something urgent comes up, please contact us as soon as you can and we’ll do our best to accommodate you. To reschedule, call us on 1300 069 955 or email hello@activehealthpsychology.com
Is telehealth available? How does it work?
Yes — we offer telehealth psychology services to clients anywhere in Australia. Sessions are conducted via a secure video platform. You’ll receive a link before your appointment. Telehealth sessions attract the same fee as in-person appointments and Medicare rebates apply in the same way. Many clients find telehealth convenient for follow-up sessions even if they started with in-person appointments.
Can I choose which psychologist I see?
Yes. When you enquire, our team will discuss your situation and help match you to the psychologist best suited to your needs. If you have a preference — perhaps based on specialty, experience with a particular area, or gender — let us know and we’ll do our best to accommodate this. You can view our team’s profiles at activehealthpsychology.com.au/about/team.
