Seeking support is one of the most
courageous things you can do.
Most adults who come to Active Health Psychology aren’t in crisis. They’re people carrying something they’ve been managing alone for too long — anxiety that’s become background noise, stress that’s quietly affecting sleep and relationships, or a sense that they could be functioning better than they are.
You don’t need to have hit a wall to deserve support. Many people come to psychology as a proactive investment in how they want to live — building skills, gaining insight, and creating more room to breathe.
“You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit from psychology. You just need to want things to be different.”

Questions adults
commonly ask us.
The things adults most commonly want to understand before booking their first appointment.
Do I need a GP referral to book?
No referral is needed to book an appointment. You can contact us directly and we’ll get you started. However, if you’d like to access Medicare rebates, you’ll need a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) from your GP before your first session — this covers up to 10 sessions per calendar year. Call us and we can explain exactly how this works.
How much does it cost?
Session fees are listed on our fees page. If you have a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP, Medicare rebates apply — significantly reducing your out-of-pocket cost. We’re also a provider for some private health insurers. Call us and we’ll give you a clear picture of what to expect for your specific situation.
What happens in the first session?
The first session is a conversation, not an assessment. Your psychologist will ask about what’s been happening, what you’re hoping to achieve, and a bit about your background. There’s no pressure to share more than you’re comfortable with. By the end of the session, you’ll have a clear sense of the approach and a plan for how to move forward together.
Can I choose my psychologist?
Yes. We’ll recommend the best match based on your situation and goals, but you’re welcome to request a specific psychologist. If after your first session you’d prefer to work with someone else on the team, just let us know — fit matters and we’ll make it work.
Is everything I say completeley confidential?
Yes. Everything discussed in sessions is strictly confidential. As AHPRA registered psychologists, we’re bound by professional and ethical obligations that protect your privacy. There are very limited legal exceptions (e.g. immediate risk of harm), which your psychologist will explain in your first session — but these situations are rare and you’ll always be informed.
How many sessions will I need?
It varies depending on what you’re working on. Some people find 6–8 sessions achieves what they’re looking for; others prefer ongoing support over a longer period. Your psychologist will give you a realistic sense of what to expect after your first session, and you’ll always have input into the pace and duration of your support.
